705914 - Introduction to Marine Renewable Energy
Course Description
This course provides an introduction to Marine Renewable Energy (MRE). It is a 3 day online course delivered in 6 half day blocks. MRE is a new ocean industry that represents an important part of the response to a world that is seeking a clean, renewable, decarbonized energy economy and to the growing global desire to reduce dependence on carbon-based forms of energy. While the general public is becoming more aware of the emergence and growth of renewable energy sources for electricity generation (primarily from land-based wind and solar technologies), the levels of technology-specific knowledge among the public, the media, and some key decision makers, remains low. If the full benefit of MRE is to be realized, then these challenges need to resolved and hard decisions need to be made. Choices need to be taken with respect to which technologies to develop, how they will be financed, where they will be located, and how they will be installed and maintained. These are significant decisions that require public debate, and this debate needs to be made from an informed position. The primary aim of this course is to provide students a voice in that debate.Learning Outcomes
This course will provide the student with an:
- Overview of marine renewable energy and resources
- Introduction to current and emerging technologies that exploit marine renewable energy resources.
- Introduction of MRE environmental, political, and economic constraints.
- Informed voice in Marine Renewable Energy (MRE) technology discussions and decisions.
