Course Description

This course is designed to give workers/participants an understanding of basic shellfish and sea-plant aquaculture concepts and methodologies. Topics include production value of farmed shellfish and sea-plant species, biology and life cycle, the farm cycle, early life stage and grow out culture methods, harvesting, processing and quality control.

Learning Outcomes

To enable the participant to:
  • Describe shellfish and sea-plant aquaculture practiced in Canada
  • Describe the biology and life cycles of cultured shellfish and sea-plants
  • Identify conditions and methods of shellfish aquaculture
  • Identify conditions and methods of sea-plant aquaculture
  • Describe harvesting and processing for the shellfish and sea-plant industry
  • Describe industry challenges and mitigation strategies for invasive species and climate change
