Course Description

This course is designed to give workers/participants an understanding of basic aquaculture concepts. It includes an introduction to the history of aquaculture; the production and market value of the key species in Canadian aquaculture, as well as the types of jobs created by the industry; a general introduction the biology and farming methods used for key species in Canada, including introducing the basic concepts around methods land-based and open ocean farming; examples of current ‘hot topics’ and public perception of the industry; and introducing new and upcoming innovations in the industry.

Learning Outcomes

To enable the participant to:

  • Understand the origins of aquaculture and its importance to the Canadian economy
  • Know which species are cultured in Canadian aquaculture and their economic value
  • Understand the basic life history of key species in Canada, and the methods by which they are cultured
  • Understand the difference between land-based and open-ocean culture systems and why they are used
  • Be aware of the influence of public perception on the industry
  • Be able to identify new innovations in aquaculture
  • Have a basic understanding of how the industry is governed in Canada
