Course Description

This primarily practical exercise course is designed to augment training received as part of the SVOP course and provide hands on practice in the launch, recovery, and operation of a small vessel. Participants will gain hands on practice in launching and recovering boats from a boat trailer and practice in their safe operation including evaluating acceptable conditions for the size and type of vessel. Skills will include completing inspection, field level risk assessment, proper PPE selection, launch and recovery, maneuvering, navigating by compass and GPS, pacing and transfer, towing and MOB procedures.

  • To enable course participants to identify the regulations governing the construction and operation of boat trailers.
  • To enable course participants to explain the construction and outfitting of small vessels.
  • To enable course participants to identify the individual items of equipment on small vessels.
  • To enable course participants to identify the safety precautions required when launching and recovering a small vessel to/from a boat trailer.
  • To enable course participants to understand the operation of small vessels.
  • To enable course participants to understand how to navigate a small vessel.
  • To enable course participants to explain how to conduct pre-use inspections of trailers, boats and equipment.
  • To enable course participants to understand the operation of small vessel engines and accessories.
