Course Description

This course is designed to provide personnel with the theoretical and practical knowledge required to safely and effectively assist in the rescue of victims in ice conditions.

Learning Outcomes

  • Enable students to assess water and ice conditions as they relate to rescue operations on ice surfaces.
  • Help students understand the problems unprotected victims may encounter in ice-related situations.
  • Provide students with the knowledge and skills to properly select and use personal protective equipment (PPE) for ice rescues.
  • Help students identify the factors, rationale, and influences involved in making a rescue versus recovery decision.
  • Enable students to identify hazards and safety concerns associated with all ice rescue missions.
  • Help students develop the skills to perform a non-entry rescue of an icebound victim while recognizing hazards to rescuers.
  • Help students develop the skills to assist and support ice rescue personnel by tending attached tether lines.

Prerequisites should be provided to administration prior to course start date but students can bring the prerequisites along the morning of registration.

Please dress for prevailing weather conditions.

Please be advised that the daily course schedules are subject to change and all participants should be prepared for course deliveries outside normal business hours (i.e. evenings and weekends). You will be notified if any such change is necessary. In the event of inclement weather, students should visit www.mi.mun.ca for important announcements regarding class cancellations and rescheduling. Announcements regarding class cancellations will also be on local radio stations.

If you are eligible to receive a T2202A for tax purposes, they will be available on Short Course Registration in February of the following year. Students are advised to log into your Destiny account in order to print a copy of your T2202A form.
