203406 - Basic Defensive Firefighting
Course Description
The Basic Defensive Firefighting course is an introductory course designed for new entrants to the firefighting community. The course provides the student with the minimum knowledge and skill set required before being allowed to participate in a defensive role at a fire scene.
Learning Outcomes
- Enable students to understand the principles of fire behavior.
- Enable students to operate and use all types of tools, appliances, and protective equipment required for basic defensive firefighting and fire control.
- Enable students to conduct defensive firefighting operations.
- Enable students to properly select and effectively operate a portable fire extinguisher.
- Enable students to draft from and set up a portable water tank.

To comply with Provincial OH&S legislation all students participating in this course are required to be clean shaven and must provide a fit test certificate (quantitative) for use of Scott AV 3000 style face piece. Fit testing for this training can be completed on site. Please note that there is a fee associated for this service of $65 plus tax.

Please be advised that the daily course schedules are subject to change and all participants should be prepared for course deliveries outside normal business hours (i.e. evenings and weekends). You will be notified if any such change is necessary. In the event of inclement weather, students should visit www.mi.mun.ca for important announcements regarding class cancellations and rescheduling. Announcements regarding class cancellations will also be on local radio stations.
If you are eligible to receive a T2202A for tax purposes, they will be available on Short Course Registration in February of the following year. Students are advised to log into your Destiny account in order to print a copy of your T2202A form.
