Course Description

This is a Technical Rescuer Course that introduces the student to both the theoretical and practical aspects of Confined Space Rescue Techniques. This course incorporates the Awareness, Operations, and Technician Level requirements to meet the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1006: Standard for Technical Rescue Personnel Professional Qualifications, 2017 Edition. Chapter 7 Confined Space.

Learning Outcomes

Awareness:

  • Enable students to recognize a confined space and understand the need for confined space search and rescue.
  • Enable students to initiate contact and establish communications where possible.
  • Enable students to recognize and identify the hazards associated with non-entry confined space emergencies and perform a non-entry rescue.
  • Enable students to implement the emergency response system for confined space emergencies, including site control and scene management.

Operations:

  • Enable students to assess existing and potential conditions at confined space emergencies.
  • Enable students to protect themselves and others from hazards within and near the confined space.
  • Enable students to recognize and manage physical and psychological challenges affecting rescuers entering confined spaces.
  • Enable students to understand the roles and duties of all rescue team members.
  • Enable students to conduct continuous or frequent interval monitoring at a confined space.
  • Enable students to perform entry-type rescues and use victim packaging devices in large, unobstructed confined spaces.
  • Enable students to use rope-based lowering and raising systems in high-angle environments.

Technician:

  • Enable students to develop hazard isolation and control strategies.
  • Enable students to plan responses for entry-type rescues in hazardous environments.
  • Enable students to implement planned rescue responses.
  • Enable students to use victim packaging devices suitable for confined spaces with small portals or internal congestion.

Prerequisites

Advanced Medical First Responder Level I (40 hours) and/or equivalent
NOTE: Certification in NFPA 1006 Confined Space Awareness must be successfully completed before receiving certification in NFPA 1006 Confined Space Operations. Certification in NFPA 1006 Confined Space Operations must be successfully completed before receiving certification in NFPA 1006 Confined Space Technician.
