101011 - Dynamic Positioning Simulation
Course Description
This course is designed to give the student further training in the operation of Dynamic Positioning (DP) systems for different types of vessels. It will give the student an in-depth understanding of the operation of the DP system. The course will include exercises on a DP simulator that will allow the student to plan and carry out a variety of routine DP operations as well as observe and develop responses to various emergency and failure situations.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course the student should:
- Carry out operational planning, risk assessment and hazard identification tasks.
- Set up the DP system for a particular task.
- Operate the communications.
- Analyze the trends.
- Discuss systems failures.
- Decide on courses of action because of systems failures.
- React to alarms and printer readout.
- Initiate DP Alert status alarms.
- React to all events occurring
- Operate the desk under normal and pressured conditions.
- Practice effective teamwork.
- Apply the lessons learned to date.

NOTE: This certificate will also include the Nautical Institute logo as well as a student number.
Prerequisites
Dynamic Positioning - Induction Course;
30 days Dynamic Positioning Sea-time (If initial Induction Course completed prior to January 2015);
60 days DP Sea-time (If initial Induction Course completed after January 2015);
Completion of required Nautical Institute Logbook tasks
Notes
Please note that the prerequisite for the DP Simulation course is the DP Induction course and 30 days seagoing DP familiarization (if you completed your Induction course before January 1, 2015) or 60 days DP sea time (if you completed your Induction course after January 1, 2015). The DP Induction course expires 5 years from the date of completion.
You will be required to submit your Nautical Institute logbook for assessment before beginning the class.
If you received your Nautical Institute Logbook before February 1, 2013, you must meet the minimum requirements as specified on logbook pages 3 to 7 (relating to: C Seagoing Familiarization Watchkeeping Log) of the "DP Logbook Guide" as issued by the Nautical Institute. If you received your Nautical Institute Logbook between February 1, 2013 and January 1, 2015 you must meet the minimum requirements as specified on PDF document pages 11 to 16 (relating to: Section C DP Familiarization Log) of the " Black Logbook Guide” as issued by the Nautical Institute. If you received your Nautical Institute Logbook after January 1, 2015 you must meet the minimum requirements (relating to completion of tasks) as specified on the top of the first page of the "Task sections" of your “Dynamic Positioning Training Logbook for Offshore Scheme”.

Compliance with this requirement will be verified when your logbook is reviewed on the first morning of the course. You will not be permitted to do the course if you do not meet this requirement.
Upon course completion, all candidates will be required to complete a practical examination administered by the Marine Institute as well as an online examination administered by the Nautical Institute, before receiving a stamp in the Nautical Institute Logbook for successful course completion.
