Course Description

This course is designed to provide skills and knowledge regarding the safe and efficient operation of the ship’s machinery to watchkeeping engineers.

Learning Outcomes

The student will be able to:
  • List the machinery and associated systems and equipment which form the simulated plant.
  • Describe and list the instrumentation used in the simulated plant for measurement.
  • State how and where the machinery units forming the plant can be controlled.
  • State how safe practices must always be used when preparing machinery units and associated systems for startup and operation.
  • Observe and apply safe practices in all exercises.
  • Prepare, start up and run the diesel electric generators.
  • Prepare and raise steam to normal working pressure.
  • Prepare, start and run the steam cargo turbines.
  • Apply preparation procedures for the main propulsion engine.
  • Prepare, start and run the main propulsion units and associated systems.
  • Locate and apply remedial action for malfunctions or faults.
  • Maintain a safe engineering watch.
  • State duties associated with taking over and accepting a watch.
  • State the routine duties undertaken during a watch.
  • State the duties associated with handing over of a watch

Prerequisites

Applicant has a minimum of six months of sea service performing duties related to an engineering position on board a vessel
OR
Applicant is registered with a Marine Engineering Cadet Training Program as defined in Transport Canada Publication 8911.


You will be required to provide a Letter of Sea Service from Transport Canada. Applicant has a minimum of six months of sea service performing duties related to an engineering position on board a vessel.  The Letter of Sea Service MUST be submitted to the Office of the Registrar on or before the start date of the course.
