Course Description

A comprehensive course which enables radio station personnel, ashore and afloat, operating in accordance with the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) to utilize efficiently all aspects of the GMDSS communications matrix. In addition, this course adheres to the fundamental recommendations for training of maritime radio personnel as outlined in the International Maritime Organization’s Resolution A.703(17).

Learning Outcomes

  • To help students understand the basic features of the maritime mobile service and the maritime mobile - satellite service.
  • To provide students with the knowledge to operate the basic ship’s station equipment.
  • To help students follow the operational procedures of the GMDSS system and subsystems.
  • To use the English language, both written and spoken, for the satisfactory exchange of communications relevant to the safety of life at sea.
  • To help students relate the theoretical knowledge of the GMDSS to practical communications procedures.

Prerequisites

Applicants must hold either a General Operator’s Certificate or a Restricted Operator’s Certificate - Marine or successful completion of Marine Institute Nautical Science Diploma course Navigation 2300 or documented previous radio communications experience.
