Course Description

This is an introductory course in the theory and practice of navigation. It includes the fundamentals of the terrestrial coordinate system and practical use of the nautical chart. It also includes navigation safety and bridge watch procedures for Watchkeeping Mate of a fishing vessel of less than 24 metres in length.

Learning Outcomes

This course intends to:

• Provide students with an overview of the geographic coordinate system, including latitude and longitude.
• Provide students with practical knowledge and the ability to use nautical charts to safely navigate a fishing vessel.
• Provide students with an overview of the magnetic compass and how to apply compass error to obtain true direction.
• Provide students with practical knowledge to construct a dead reckoning plot on a nautical chart.
• Introduce students to publications required on board a small fishing vessel and provide practical knowledge of their use.
• Introduce students to the international collision regulations (COLREGS) with Canadian modifications.
• Provide students with an understanding of the principles for keeping a navigational watch on a small fishing vessel, as outlined in STCW Code Sections A-VIII/2 and B-VIII/2.
