Course Description

This course is designed to provide personnel with the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills necessary to participate as members of Fast Rescue Boat in accordance with STCW ‘95 A-VI/2-2.

Learning Outcomes

To enable course participants to learn about, understand and become proficient in:

  • The construction and outfit of fast rescue boats and individual items of their equipment
  • Particular characteristics and facilities of fast rescue boats
  • Taking safety pre-cautions during launch and recovery of a fast rescue boat
  • Properly righting a capsized fast rescue boat
  • Properly handling a fast rescue boat in prevailing adverse weather and sea conditions
  • The navigational and safety equipment in a fast rescue boat
  • Search patters and environmental factors affecting their execution
  • Assessing the readiness of fast rescue boats and related equipment for immediate use
  • The maintenance, emergency repairs, normal inflating and deflation of buoyancy compartments of inflated fast rescue boats
  • Properly starting and operating a fast rescue boat engine and its accessories
  • Credential Awarded

    Transport Canada Training Certificate

    Prerequisites

    A person must be at least 16 years of age to take the FRB course Training certificate in Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats (PSC) (or equivalent)

    Notes

    Students must be of at least 16 years of age to take the FRB. Students are required to hold a valid Basic Safety certificate to participate in this course.

    Please be advised that as per Part 3 of the Canada Shipping Act, 2001 (CSA 2001) in order for any person to receive an EXN Training Certificate on behalf of Transport Canada Marine Safety (TCMS), you must provide your CDN number. Persons who need to obtain a CDN number must visit their nearest Transport Canada office (St. John’s Location: 10 Barters Hill, St. John’s, NL, 772-5167) and apply in person with proper identification containing the candidates picture that will clearly identify the candidate (ie. Passport, birth certificate, driver’s license).

    Please bring a change of clothes and a towel daily for practical sessions. Dress for prevailing weather conditions. Please bring footwear suitable for boat operations. (waterproof footwear) **NO WARM CLOTHING WILL BE PROVIDED**

    Please be advised that the OSSC daily course schedules are subject to change and all participants should be prepared for course deliveries outside normal business hours (i.e. evenings and weekends). You will be notified if any such change is necessary. In the event of inclement weather, students should visit www.mi.mun.ca for important announcements regarding class cancellations and rescheduling. Announcements regarding class cancellations will also be on local radio stations.

    If you are eligible to receive a T2202A for tax purposes, they will be available on Short Course Registration in February of the following year. Students are advised to log into your Destiny account in order to print a copy of your T2202A form.
