203100 - Advanced Fire Fighting
Course Description
This is an advanced Marine Fire Fighting course designed to meet STCW Regulation VI/3 Advanced Fire Fighting and requirements under the Canadian Marine Certification Regulations up to the Chief Officer/Second Engineer level.
Learning Outcomes
This course will enable participants to learn about, understand and become proficient in:
- Firefighting procedures at sea and in port with particular emphasis on organization, tactics and command
- Use of water for fire-extinguishing, the effect on ship stability, precautions and corrective procedures
- Communicaton and co-ordination during fire fighting operations
- Ventilation control, including smoke extraction
- Control of fuel and electrical systems
- Firefighting process hazards (dry distillation, chemical reactions, boiler uptake fire, etc.)
- Firefighting involving dangerous goods
- Fire precautions and hazards associated with storing and handling materials (paints, etc.)
- Managing and controlling injured persons
- Procedures for co-ordination with shore-based firefighters
- Preparing contingency plans
- Composition of fire parties and allocation of personnel to fire parties
- Strategies and tactics for controlling fires in various parts of the ship
- Fire-detection systems
- Fixed fire-extinguishing systems
- Portable and mobile fire-extinguishing equipment, including appliances, pumps and rescue, salvage, life-support, personal protective and communication equipment
- Requirements for statutory and classification societies
- Assessing cause of incidents involving fire

Prerequisites
- Person must be at least 16 years of age to take the AFF course.
- Marine Institute approved Medical Clearance
- Marine Institute Approved Fit Testing
- STCW Basic Safety (or equivalent)
Notes
Copy of valid Transport Canada Seafarer's medical is required for this training. Medicals should be provided to administration prior to course start date but students can bring the medical along the morning of registration. (Should you have a valid medical from another jurisdiction, please contact administration to have the medical validated for training.) To comply with Provincial OH&S legislation the OSSC requires all students participating in this course to be clean shaven and must provide a fit test certificate (quantitative) for use of Scott AV 3000 style face piece. Fit testing for this training can be completed at the OSSC. Please note that there is a fee associated for this service of $65 plus tax.
Please be advised that as per Part 3 of the Canada Shipping Act, 2001 (CSA 2001) in order for any person to receive an EXN Training Certificate on behalf of Transport Canada Marine Safety (TCMS), you must provide your CDN number. Persons who need to obtain a CDN number must visit their nearest Transport Canada office (St. John’s Location: 10 Barters Hill, St. John’s, NL, 772-5167) and apply in person with proper identification containing the candidates picture that will clearly identify the candidate (ie. Passport, birth certificate, driver’s license).
Please bring a change of clothes and a towel daily for practical sessions. Dress for prevailing weather conditions. **NO WARM CLOTHING WILL BE PROVIDED**
Please be advised that the OSSC daily course schedules are subject to change and all participants should be prepared for course deliveries outside normal business hours (i.e. evenings and weekends). You will be notified if any such change is necessary.
