Course Description

This course meets the requirements of STCW Convention Regulation VI/1 and STCW Code Tables A-VI/1-1, A- VI/1-2 and A-VI/1-4, basic safety training for seafarers as noted in TP 4957 in Marine Personnel Regulations in Basic Safety and in Marine Fire Fighting.

Learning Outcomes

  • To enable course participants to identify emergency procedures, pollution prevention, safe working practices and human relationships while in the marine environment.
  • To enable course participants to respond to emergency situations.
  • To enable course participants to minimize the risk of fire, to maintain a state of readiness, and to fight and extinguish fires on board a vessel.
  • To enable course participants to survive at sea in the event of ship abandonment.

Credential Awarded

Transport Canada Training Certificate
(Awarding of Certificate is subject to participant producing a current Marine Basic First Aid or Marine Advanced First Aid certificate in accordance with STCW Code Table A-VI/1-3)

Prerequisites

A person must be at least 16 years of age to take the STCW Basic Safety course;
Marine Institute approved medical clearance;
Marine Institute approved fit testing

Notes

The following three courses traditionally make up the MED program: STCW'95 VI/1 Basic Safety, STCW'95 A-VI/2-1 Survival Craft & Marine First Aid

Copy of valid Transport Canada Seafarer's medical is required for this training. Medicals should be provided to administration prior to course start date but students can bring the medical along the morning of registration. (Should you have a valid medical from another jurisdiction, please contact administration to have the medical validated for training.) Please be advised students must provide proof of a valid Marine First Aid certificate in order to obtain the Basic Safety EXN training certificate.

To comply with Provincial OH&S legislation all students participating in this course to be clean shaven and must provide a fit test certificate (quantitative) for use of Scott AV 3000 style face piece. Fit testing for this training can be completed on site. Please note that there is a fee associated for this service of $65 plus tax.

Please bring a change of clothes and a towel daily for practical sessions. Dress for prevailing weather conditions. **NO WARM CLOTHING WILL BE PROVIDED**

Please be advised that daily course schedules are subject to change and all participants should be prepared for course deliveries outside normal business hours (i.e. evenings and weekends). You will be notified if any such change is necessary. In the event of inclement weather, students should visit www.mi.mun.ca for important announcements regarding class cancellations and rescheduling. Announcements regarding class cancellations will also be on local radio stations.

If you are eligible to receive a T2202A for tax purposes, they will be available on Short Course Registration in February of the following year. Students are advised to log into your Destiny account in order to print a copy of your T2202A form.
