Course Description

This course was developed to comply with the requirements of the Marine Personnel Regulations on minimum training in personal survival techniques and fire fighting for Canadian seafarers sailing on board passenger vessels, workboats or fishing vessels engaged on a voyage in Canadian waters.

Learning Outcomes

This course will:

  • Provide seafarers with basic understanding of the hazards related to the marine environment and their own vessel, and of how to prevent shipboard incidents including fire
  • Provide seafarers with the knowledge they need to raise and react to alarms and deal with emergencies
  • Ensure seafarers are able to provide assistance in fire and abandonment situations
  • Provide seafarers with the knowledge and skills to help in their own survival and rescue
  • Teach seafarers the proper procedures for maintaining emergency equipment according to manufacturer guidelines
  • Provide seafarers with the knowledge to maintain the appropriate record-keeping procedures for safety equipment
  • Ensure that crew members of passenger vessels have the knowledge and skills necessary to keep passengers safe and help them survive an emergency
  • Enable crew members of passenger vessels to plan, organize and carry out safety drills so the passengers will be aware of safety equipment and procedures.

Prerequisites

A person must be at least 15 years of age to take the DVS course

Notes

Please bring a change of clothes and a towel daily for practical sessions. Dress for prevailing weather conditions **NO WARM CLOTHING WILL BE PROVIDED**

Please be advised that daily course schedules are subject to change and all participants should be prepared for course deliveries outside normal business hours (i.e. evenings and weekends). You will be notified if any such change is necessary. In the event of inclement weather, students should visit www.mi.mun.ca for important announcements regarding class cancellations and rescheduling. Announcements regarding class cancellations will also be on local radio stations.

If you are eligible to receive a T2202A for tax purposes, they will be available on Short Course Registration in February of the following year. Students are advised to log into your Destiny account in order to print a copy of your T2202A form.
