Course Description

This is a practical course in plotting using plotting sheets, charts, RADAR and ARPA. The course is intended to provide an opportunity for students to increase their level of proficiency in the mechanics of using the parallel rule and divider as well as the equipment on the RADAR and ARPA. The course will also introduce the student to the essential information and tools required to detect and recognize ice through effective watchkeeping practices.

Learning Outcomes

This course will develop the student's ability:
  • To plot positions of targets on a chart and to obtain range and bearing of the targets as well as course and speed.
  • To understand function and operation of RADAR and ARPA.
  • To use RADAR to obtain range and bearing and to plot these on a chart to obtain Latitude and Longitude.
  • To use ARPA to obtain range and bearing as well as course and speed of targets.
  • To understand the function and operation of the Rutter Sigma 6 Ice RADAR
  • To help the Radar Ice Observer obtain relevant information and to identify that could be encountered along the East Coast of Newfoundland and Labrador
  • To help Radar Ice Observer understand the basic techniques, hazards, and precautions necessary for safe transits of vessels in ice
  • To ensure the Radar lee Observer understand the importance of standard watchkeeping practices in a marine environment
