Course Description

This is a refresher training course in MED with respect to proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats other than fast rescue boats and is designed to meet the requirements of chapter VI, section A-VI/2, paragraph 5 of the STCW convention, including the Manila amendments. Seafarers qualified in MED PSC in accordance with Chapter VI, Section A-VI/2, paragraph 4 of the STCW Convention will refresh their MED PSC knowledge and skills as evidence of having maintained the required standard of competence to undertake the tasks, duties and responsibilities listed in column 1 of table A-VI/2-1 of the convention.

Learning Outcomes

To enable the students to:

  • Refresh skills in basic emergency duties through demonstrations and practical drills and exercises
  • Safely launch, operate and recover lifeboats
  • Safely launch, operate and recover rescue boats
  • Safely launch and operate inflatable and rigid hulled life rafts
  • Correctly identify and use survival craft equipment
  • Manage marine survival
  • Manage marine rescue

Transport Canada Training Certificate

Prerequisites

  • Participants must be 16 years of age
  • Valid training certificate in MED PSC or equivalent under TP4957  

Notes

Please bring a change of clothes and a towel daily for practical sessions. Dress for prevailing weather conditions. **NO WARM CLOTHING WILL BE PROVIDED**

Closed toe shoes/boots are mandatory.

Please be advised that the OSSC daily course schedules are subject to change and all participants should be prepared for course deliveries outside normal business hours (i.e. evenings and weekends). You will be notified if any such change is necessary. In the event of inclement weather, students should visit www.mi.mun.ca for important announcements regarding class cancellations and rescheduling. Announcements regarding class cancellations will also be on local radio stations.
