Course Description

Part A: Electronic Positioning Systems: This is an electronic navigation course required to obtain a Canadian Watchkeeping Mate Certificate. The purpose of this course is to provide the student with the knowledge and skill required for the correct operation of navigational equipment. 

Part B: Simulated Electronic Navigation Operational: The course will cover the requirements of the Standards of Training Certificate and Watchkeeping (STCW) Convention of 1978 (including 2010 Manila amendments). It will provide the student a thorough knowledge of the application of the Collision Regulations and the principles to be observed in keeping a navigational watch in a simulated environment while using electronic aids to plot the vessel's position and progress.

Part A: Electronic Positioning Systems:
Part 1: Plan and Conduct a Passage and Determine Position
1)  Electronic Systems of Position Fixing
2)  Electronic Depth Sounding System and Speed and Distance Measurement
3)  Basic Principle and the Operational Use of AIS and VDR System
4)  Ship's Compass and Steering System
Part 2: Use of RADAR and ARPA to Maintain Safety of Navigation
1)  Basic Theory and Operation of a Marine Radar System
2)  IMO Performance Standards and Settings for Radar Equipment
3)  Set Up and Operation of Radar in Accordance with Manufacturer's Instructions
4)  Automatic Radar Plotting Aid (ARPA) System

Part B: Simulated Electronic Navigation Operational:

NOTE: Students will be issued two certificates of achievement upon successful completion
Part A:
Electronic Positioning Systems, Transport Canada Certificate
Part B: Simulated Electronic Navigation Operational, Transport Canada Certificate

 

Prerequisites

Part A: None

Part B:  Students must have successfully completed the following training course and examinations prior to register for the SEN-O training course:
1)  Part A of this course or previously completed Electronic Positioning System (EPS)
2)  Radio Communication (ROC-MC);
3)  Chartwork and Pilotage, Level 2 (C&P2);
4)  Navigation Safety (NS1);

NOTE: If the student is enrolled in a cadet training program; the student should have a good foundation and understanding of Chartwork and the Collision Regulations.
